Days after receiving a full protocol security convoy following his massive election win and ahead of his expected swearing-in as chief minister, Vijay was seen travelling without the convoy on Wednesday evening, sparking speculation amid delays in forming the government. Images of Vijay returning home without the usual high-level security arrangements quickly drew attention, as he is still widely regarded as the chief minister-designate. However, police officials told NDTV that the withdrawal of the full convoy came at Vijay’s own request.

A senior police officer confirmed that only basic pilot security would continue, adding that Vijay decided to opt out of the full protocol convoy because of the delay in the swearing-in process. Officials noted that such security convoys are generally provided to an incoming chief minister or chief minister-designate to ensure smooth movement and minimize inconvenience to the public.

The move comes as uncertainty continues over Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony, which was initially expected on Thursday but has reportedly been postponed due to insufficient numbers in the assembly. Although TVK emerged as the single largest party with a landmark victory, it still falls 11 seats short of the majority mark. Congress has offered support through its five MLAs, but Vijay still needs backing from at least six more legislators. No rival party has yet staked claim to form the government.

Sources say TVK is now seeking support from parties including VCK, CPI, and CPM, whose combined strength could help the party secure a majority. These parties are expected to make a final decision on May 8. The Tamil Nadu Governor, whom Vijay had earlier met to stake claim to form the government, has reportedly asked him to submit a list of 118 supporting MLAs. As negotiations continue behind the scenes, the postponement of the swearing-in appears to have affected even official protocol arrangements, highlighting how crucial the numbers game remains in the battle for power.
