US-Designated Lashkar-e-Taiba Figure Muhammad Sarwar Dies in Lahore Amid Unclear Circumstances

Muhammad Sarwar, a senior figure associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Punjab president of the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML), has died in Lahore, Pakistan. The US Treasury Department designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2016 over his role in raising and transferring funds for the militant organisation.
According to a PMML spokesperson, Sarwar collapsed while travelling from his residence to a mosque for prayers. The party did not officially confirm the cause of death, although Pakistani media reports suggested that he suffered a fatal head injury after falling down a flight of stairs. The circumstances have not been independently established.
US authorities said Sarwar had been involved in LeT's fundraising activities since the early 2000s. According to the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), he served as the group's Lahore chief from at least January 2015 and used Pakistan's formal financial system to collect and transfer funds for the organisation. He had also reportedly led groups of businessmen to LeT facilities in 2008 to solicit donations.
In 2016, US authorities designated Sarwar and fellow LeT figure Shahid Mahmood as global terrorists, aiming to disrupt the organisation's financial and support networks. Sarwar's death brings renewed attention to the activities of LeT-linked figures in Pakistan, although the exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.
