In a swift response to widespread unrest, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved significant minimum wage increases for workers across various skill levels, effective from April 1. The decision, announced just one day after chaotic protests crippled factories in Noida's industrial hubs, offers hikes of up to ₹3,000 per month and marks a roughly 21% boost overall.

The protests erupted on April 12 in areas like Phase 2 Hosiery Complex and Sector 60, where thousands of garment and factory workers demanded pay parity with neighboring states. Frustrated by stagnant wages—unskilled laborers earning around ₹11,000-13,000 amid rising inflation and grueling 10-12 hour shifts—demonstrators clashed with police. The violence led to torched vehicles, stone-pelting, property damage, and at least 50 arrests, with injuries reported on both sides.

Inspired by Haryana's recent 35% wage revision that raised unskilled pay to ₹15,000-17,000, Noida workers highlighted the NCR disparity: their minimums lagged behind Gurugram's ₹15,220 and Delhi's ₹18,456. A government high-powered committee acted quickly, revising rates for the Noida-Ghaziabad zone while clarifying it's an interim measure ahead of national Labour Code updates—no full jump to the rumored ₹20,000, but enough to address immediate grievances like overtime and parity.

Authorities have ramped up security to restore order, allowing factories employing over 100,000 in sectors like electronics and apparel to resume operations. Unions welcome the change but push for more, including Diwali bonuses and weekly offs. This episode echoes past flare-ups, like Manesar, proving worker protests can force policy shifts in India's competitive industrial belts.
