UK Officers Face Backlash After Video Captures Teen Saying "I Can't Breathe" Following Stabbing

A shocking video showing UK police officers handcuffing a teenager moments after he was fatally stabbed has sparked widespread outrage across Britain and renewed debate over police conduct. The incident involved 18-year-old Henry Nowak, who was stabbed during an altercation in Southampton. According to reports, officers responding to the scene initially treated the teenager as a suspect rather than a victim, despite him repeatedly telling police that he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe.
Bodycam footage released after court proceedings shows the teenager lying on the ground while officers restrain him. In the video, he can reportedly be heard saying, “I can’t breathe,” before his condition worsened. The accused, 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, an Indian-origin Sikh man, was later convicted in connection with the fatal stabbing and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.
During the investigation, prosecutors said Digwa falsely claimed he had been attacked in a racist incident, which initially influenced the police response at the scene. Authorities later determined that the claims were not supported by evidence. The release of the footage has triggered strong public reaction on social media, with many questioning why officers failed to immediately recognize the teenager as a victim in need of urgent medical attention.
Following the controversy, Hampshire Police acknowledged concerns surrounding the handling of the case. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the actions of the officers involved. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the footage as “deeply troubling” and urged the public to allow the investigation process to continue peacefully.
The case has also reignited discussions around knife crime in the UK, particularly involving young people. Several community groups have appealed for calm, warning against attempts to turn the incident into a racial or religious issue. As investigations continue, the incident remains one of the most debated policing controversies in the UK this year, raising fresh concerns about emergency response procedures, accountability, and public trust in law enforcement.
