US President Donald Trump held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday at Zhongnanhai, the heavily guarded leadership compound of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing, during his two-day visit to China. The meeting began in the morning local time, with both leaders seen walking together through the gardens of the expansive complex before moving into a private discussion away from the press.

Zhongnanhai, often compared to the White House, functions as the central headquarters of China’s top leadership. Covering around 1,500 acres, it includes lakes, gardens, pavilions, and government buildings, and is known for its strict security and secrecy. During the visit, Trump reportedly admired the landscaped gardens while Xi accompanied him. The quiet, heavily secured compound, surrounded by historic red walls and advanced surveillance, stood in stark contrast to the busy city outside.

After a brief private conversation lasting about 10 minutes, the two leaders continued their walk. Trump commented, “These are the most beautiful roses anyone has ever seen,” as they strolled through the gardens. When asked by journalists about the visit, Trump gave a thumbs-up, while officials directed reporters not to ask questions.

The leaders later passed through a covered corridor featuring traditional Chinese artwork and arrived at a pavilion, where Xi explained the history of Zhongnanhai through a translator. Trump was accompanied by senior US officials including Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Xi also mentioned sending rose seeds to Trump, according to CNN. Further discussions were expected later over tea in a smaller, more focused meeting involving reduced delegations. Trump’s team also included US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador to China David Perdue, while Xi was joined by top Chinese officials including Cai Qi, Wang Yi, He Lifeng, Ma Zhaoxu, and Xie Feng.
