The Indian Army is undergoing a significant transformation by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its operational framework, aiming to enhance surveillance, threat detection, and decision-making capabilities. AI-driven tools are being used for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) along critical borders like the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC). These technologies enable real-time monitoring through drones, satellites, and data fusion, helping military commanders receive timely, actionable insights. This integration allows for rapid responses to threats and improves situational awareness in complex environments.

To support this technological shift, the Army has established dedicated institutions and collaborations. The Defence AI Project Agency (DAIPA), Defence AI Council (DAIC), and the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE) are playing key roles in AI research and development. In partnership with institutions like IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IISc Bengaluru, the Army is advancing projects in AI, robotics, and electric vehicles. The launch of the Indian Army AI Incubation Centre (IAAIIC) promotes innovation and skill-building, while AI tools such as SAMA and satellite image analysis systems are already in use.
Beyond ISR, AI is also being used in simulations, logistics, and cybersecurity. Realistic training environments and Metaverse-enabled war games are helping prepare soldiers for dynamic battlefield scenarios. AI algorithms adjust simulations to reflect varying conditions, strengthening adaptability and decision-making. Additionally, AI supports predictive analysis, strategic planning, and cybersecurity by detecting advanced threats. As the Army explores future technologies like quantum computing, 5G/6G, and autonomous systems, AI is set to redefine India’s military preparedness and position the nation as a leader in defence innovation.
