Tragedy in Toronto: Indian Student Killed Near University Campus, Accused on the Run

A 20-year-old Indian student studying at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus was tragically shot dead earlier this week. The accused remains on the run, prompting local police to launch an intensive search. The victim has been identified as Shivank Avasthi, a Life Sciences student from India who had come to Canada to pursue higher education. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon near the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road, close to the university campus.
According to Toronto Police, officers responded to reports of a person found injured around 3:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Avasthi with gunshot wounds. Despite emergency resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have not yet released specific details about the suspect or motive but confirmed the accused fled before police arrived.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over Avasthi’s death and assured full assistance to his family. In a statement, the mission said it was in close contact with Canadian authorities to ensure support and justice. Students at the University of Toronto have reported heightened anxiety following the killing. Some have urged campus security to increase patrols in areas frequented by students. “He was a bright, hardworking person who had a lot of dreams,” said one of Shivank’s classmates, describing the loss as “utterly devastating.”
Avasthi’s death marks Toronto’s 41st homicide case this year. It comes amid growing concern over the safety of international students in Canada, especially those from India, which accounts for the largest share of foreign students in the country. Anyone with information about the shooting has been urged to contact Toronto Police or provide anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers (416-222-TIPS).
