Top Meta Executives Set to Visit India Amid Discussions on Content Moderation Policies

Senior members of Meta’s global leadership team are expected to visit India within the next two weeks to meet officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and discuss the company's content moderation practices, IT Secretary S. Krishnan said on Thursday. Speaking at the sidelines of an event, Krishnan revealed that Meta introduced updated procedures for handling accounts belonging to prominent public figures on July 28. The move came a day after a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefly removed from the platform.

Meta later clarified that the removal resulted from an error in its automated content moderation system. During the upcoming discussions, government officials are expected to seek a detailed explanation of the technical reasons behind the removal of the Prime Minister’s post and review the company’s policies governing such moderation decisions.

The Centre issued a formal summons to Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Joel Kaplan, requesting his personal appearance to explain the platform’s content moderation framework. Kaplan, who assumed the role in January 2025, received the notice on Tuesday after Meta submitted its initial explanation regarding the incident involving the Prime Minister’s post about the government's response to examination paper leaks.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology has called senior representatives from Meta, X, Snapchat, and Google to appear on August 3 at 4 p.m. The committee will examine how these platforms enforce their policies to safeguard the digital privacy of women, children, and other internet users. Krishnan also said the government is reviewing responses submitted by peer-to-peer messaging platforms regarding the use and regulation of usernames on their services.
