SEOUL – The number of people injured after South Korean fighter jets accidentally dropped bombs on a civilian area has risen to 29, including 15 civilians and 14 soldiers, the country's defense ministry confirmed on Friday (March 7). Among the injuries were cases of ear damage from the explosions, as well as migraines and anxiety, according to Defence Ministry spokesperson Jeon Ha-kyu. Nine people remain hospitalized, with two in serious condition.
The incident occurred on Thursday when two fighter jets mistakenly released eight 500-pound Mk82 bombs over a town in Pocheon, about 40 kilometers northeast of Seoul. The bombs were supposed to land within a designated military training area, but due to a pilot’s incorrect input of coordinates, they fell outside the zone. The resulting explosions shook homes and buildings, as seen in video footage.
In response, authorities have suspended all live-fire exercises while investigating the cause of the mishap. However, officials stated that this will not impact the large-scale joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, set to begin on Monday. The incident has sparked anger among residents. On Friday, activists and locals from Pocheon gathered near the defense ministry in Seoul, demanding an end to military drills that put civilians at risk. "We, the citizens of Pocheon, are questioning the necessity of these ongoing exercises," said local resident Lee Myoung-won. "Who are they really protecting, and at what cost?"
