Sheikh Hasina's Son Warns Bangladesh Is Becoming "Another Pakistan", Says It Should Concern India

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has expressed serious concerns over the political and security situation in Bangladesh, claiming that the country is moving in the direction of becoming “another Pakistan.” He said the developments should be a matter of concern not only for Bangladesh but also for neighboring India.

Speaking during a virtual interaction with journalists at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in New Delhi, Joy alleged that extremist groups have gained greater freedom since the political changes that followed the ouster of the Awami League government in 2024. He claimed that individuals previously convicted on terrorism-related charges had been released and that banned organizations were now operating openly.

Joy further alleged that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has increased its influence in Bangladesh, warning that such developments could have long-term implications for regional stability. He argued that any rise in extremist activities across India's eastern border would directly affect New Delhi's security interests. These allegations have not been independently verified, and Bangladeshi authorities have not publicly responded to the specific claims.

The remarks came alongside Sheikh Hasina's first major public address since leaving Bangladesh in 2024. Addressing supporters remotely from India, the former prime minister reaffirmed her intention to return to Bangladesh in December despite facing legal challenges and the possibility of arrest. She said she was prepared to face any consequences if it meant standing with the people of her country.

Hasina also called for the restoration of democratic institutions and urged Bangladeshi authorities to lift restrictions on her Awami League party. She described the cases against her as politically motivated and accused the current leadership of taking the country in the wrong direction. The comments from both Hasina and her son come at a time of heightened political tensions in Bangladesh. The country has witnessed significant political changes since the 2024 uprising that forced Hasina from office, with the new government taking several steps against the former ruling party. Relations between India and Bangladesh have also faced challenges during this period.
