Samuel L. Jackson and Daveed Diggs are teaming up for a new hitman thriller directed by Ernest Dickerson. Jackson will play a retired, outspoken hitman named Morris, who used to work for a mob boss. Diggs plays his nephew, Leslie. When Leslie gets in trouble with the mob, Morris is forced out of retirement to help him. The catch? Morris has to get the stolen money back within a weekend, or he has to kill his nephew.
As if that wasn't enough pressure, Leslie's got a baby on the way. The movie follows Morris as he drags Leslie around town, trying to fix the mess, all while giving him life lessons and dishing out some street justice. But Morris is no pushover. And when the mob double-crosses him, they're going to learn why he's considered one of the toughest guys around.
The movie, which doesn't have a title or release date yet, is written by Matthew Stone and produced by Vincent Newman. Jackson is really excited to work with Dickerson, saying he's perfect for bringing this character to life. He describes Morris as having an old-school code and being loyal, but ultimately looking out for himself. Now, all he wants is to relax and play golf. But, in the end, he finds meaning in sacrificing himself for his nephew and his nephew's child.
Jackson was recently in Netflix's "The Piano Lesson," a film adaptation of the Broadway play. He even starred in the original play back in the '80s. He talked about how the movie version added more detail to the story, showing things that were only visualized on stage, like a broken-down truck or selling watermelons in a white neighborhood.
