Russia Strikes Lakshmi Mittal-Linked Steel Plant in Ukraine, Two Killed

A Russian missile strike has hit the ArcelorMittal steel complex in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, killing two people and injuring several others as Moscow's attacks continue to threaten major industrial facilities across the country. The strike targeted the sprawling ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih complex during a wider wave of Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine. The facility, one of the country's largest steelmaking operations, suffered damage to parts of its infrastructure, including systems connected to energy generation and steel production.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is part of the global steel giant ArcelorMittal, which is led by Indian-origin billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. The company has maintained operations in Ukraine despite the enormous challenges created by the war, including attacks on energy infrastructure, electricity shortages and disruptions to transportation and industrial supply chains.
The latest strike has forced some production activities at the plant to be suspended while specialists assess the damage. Steelmaking facilities depend heavily on a stable supply of electricity and carefully controlled industrial processes, meaning damage to supporting infrastructure can have consequences beyond the areas directly hit by a missile.
Ukrainian authorities and company officials said two people were killed in the attack, while a number of others were injured. Emergency teams were deployed to the site following the strike as rescue and damage-assessment operations continued. The Kryvyi Rih facility has already faced repeated wartime disruptions. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the plant has had to adapt to attacks on Ukraine's power infrastructure and other disruptions affecting industrial production.
The latest attack comes as Russia and Ukraine continue exchanging large-scale missile and drone strikes. Ukraine has increasingly targeted military and energy-related sites inside Russia with long-range drones, while Russia has continued launching missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. The impact on ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is significant because the facility is not simply a conventional factory. It is an integrated mining and steelmaking operation that supports thousands of jobs and contributes to Ukraine's industrial output and exports.
Steel is also expected to play an important role in Ukraine's eventual reconstruction. If the war ends and large-scale rebuilding begins, the country will require enormous quantities of steel for bridges, railways, buildings, factories and other infrastructure. Keeping major domestic steelmaking capacity operational could therefore become an important part of Ukraine's economic recovery.
The immediate priority is to determine the full extent of the damage and restore affected operations as safely as possible. However, the continuing threat of Russian attacks means that even restored facilities will remain exposed to further disruption. The strike on the Lakshmi Mittal-linked plant underlines how the Russia-Ukraine war continues to affect Ukraine's economy far beyond the battlefield. Major factories, energy facilities and transportation networks remain vulnerable, while companies operating in the country face the difficult task of keeping businesses running amid an ongoing conflict.
