Rahul Gandhi's Alcohol Remark on Bhagwant Mann Intensifies AAP-Congress Tussle Ahead of Punjab Elections

The political confrontation between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has intensified ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a controversial remark about Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's alleged alcohol consumption during a rally in Sangrur. Addressing the Congress's 'Insaaf Rally' at Fagguwala village on Wednesday, Gandhi questioned Mann's leadership while attacking the AAP government over its handling of Punjab's drug problem. Recalling his interactions with Mann in Parliament, Gandhi alleged that he had noticed the smell of alcohol on the chief minister during Lok Sabha proceedings, even around 11 am.
Gandhi said that consuming alcohol was an individual's personal choice but questioned how a leader could effectively lead a campaign against substance abuse if allegations about his own conduct raised concerns. His remarks quickly triggered a political controversy, with AAP leaders accusing him of crossing the boundaries of political criticism.
The Congress leader also questioned the AAP government's promise to make Punjab drug-free after coming to power in 2022. He asked what progress had been achieved over the past four years and argued that drug addiction continued to affect communities across the state. According to Gandhi, the problem required stronger action against drug networks, better employment opportunities and greater attention to the challenges faced by young people.
The AAP responded sharply to Gandhi's comments, accusing him of focusing on personal allegations instead of addressing substantive political issues. AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised the Congress leader's remarks and questioned why opposition parties were repeatedly targeting the Punjab government. He also accused the Congress and the BJP of working towards weakening AAP's political position in the state.
Beyond the controversy surrounding Mann, Gandhi used the rally to launch a broader attack on the functioning of the Punjab government. He alleged that important decisions concerning the state were being influenced by AAP's central leadership in Delhi rather than being taken independently within Punjab. Gandhi also criticised the government over unemployment, gangster violence and farmers' concerns, arguing that the state needed leadership more closely connected with the aspirations of its people.
The Congress leader further raised the issue of law and order by referring to the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in May 2022. Gandhi recalled meeting the singer before his death and questioned the government's handling of security concerns. Moosewala's father, Balkaur Singh, was also present at the rally. The latest exchange comes as political parties begin strengthening their preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. AAP, which secured a decisive victory in the 2022 polls, is expected to face a strong challenge from Congress as the opposition party attempts to return to power in the state.
The drug menace is likely to remain one of the most prominent issues during the election campaign. AAP had made its promise to eliminate drugs a major part of its 2022 electoral campaign, making the government's performance on this front an important subject of opposition criticism. Congress is now seeking to use concerns over drug trafficking, unemployment and law and order to question the ruling party's record.
The confrontation also highlights the complicated relationship between AAP and Congress at the national level. Although both parties have been part of the broader opposition space against the BJP, their competing political interests in Punjab have frequently placed them on opposing sides. With the next Assembly elections approaching, the war of words between Rahul Gandhi and Bhagwant Mann could signal an increasingly aggressive political campaign. While Congress is attempting to challenge AAP on governance and unfulfilled promises, the ruling party is accusing its opponents of relying on personal attacks rather than offering constructive solutions to Punjab's problems. The coming months are likely to see further political exchanges as both parties seek to establish their positions ahead of the crucial electoral contest.
