PM Modi-Sukhbir Badal Meeting Fuels BJP-SAD Alliance Speculation Ahead of Punjab Polls

A meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has sparked fresh political speculation in Punjab, with attention turning to the possibility of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Akali Dal joining hands again for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Sukhbir Badal met Prime Minister Modi in Parliament on Friday, August 7. Although details of their conversation have not been officially disclosed, the meeting has fuelled speculation because of the BJP and SAD's long political association and their subsequent split in 2020.

The BJP and SAD had been allies for more than two decades before the relationship came under severe strain during the farmers' agitation against the Centre's three farm laws. The Akali Dal eventually walked out of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in 2020. The farm laws were later repealed, but the two parties did not immediately revive their electoral partnership.

Since their separation, both parties have focused on expanding their independent political presence in Punjab. The BJP has worked to strengthen its organisation and broaden its support base in the state, while the SAD has been attempting to rebuild its political position following setbacks in recent elections. The latest Modi-Badal meeting has therefore attracted considerable attention, particularly with the 2027 Assembly elections approaching. A renewed BJP-SAD alliance could potentially change the electoral equations in Punjab, where the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, BJP and SAD are expected to be major contenders.

There is no official confirmation so far that the two parties have decided to enter into a fresh alliance. BJP leaders have previously indicated that the party is capable of contesting the Punjab elections independently. Sukhbir Badal, meanwhile, has also maintained that the SAD is focused on strengthening its own organisation. Seat sharing could emerge as one of the biggest issues if the two parties eventually decide to negotiate a pact. The BJP has expanded its presence in Punjab since breaking away from the SAD and may seek a larger role than it had during their earlier partnership. For the Akali Dal, any alliance would have to be balanced against its efforts to re-establish itself as an independent political force.

The political circumstances in Punjab have also changed significantly since the BJP and SAD last fought an election together. The Aam Aadmi Party's emergence as a major force has altered the state's traditional political contest, while Congress continues to remain an important player. At the same time, divisions within the Akali camp have added another layer of complexity to the electoral battle.

Against this backdrop, the Modi-Badal meeting has become politically significant even without an alliance announcement. It could simply be an interaction between two leaders with a long political association, or it could signal the beginning of renewed discussions between the BJP and SAD. The possibility of a BJP-SAD reunion remains speculation. Any formal announcement regarding an alliance, seat-sharing arrangement or joint campaign strategy is likely to provide a clearer indication of the two parties' plans for the 2027 Punjab polls. With the election battle expected to intensify in the coming months, political observers will be closely watching whether the latest meeting develops into a broader rapprochement between the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal.
