Pakistan is facing renewed scrutiny after British Labour councillor Daalat Ali, deputy leader of Rochdale Borough Council, was reportedly detained during a visit to Pakistan and subsequently prevented from boarding a flight back to the United Kingdom. The incident has raised concerns about freedom of expression, political activism and the treatment of critics of Pakistan's Kashmir policy. Ali was visiting Pakistan as part of a civic delegation led by Rochdale's ceremonial mayor, Faisal Rana. The delegation travelled to Sahiwal, a city in Punjab that has maintained a twinning relationship with Rochdale since 1998.

According to reports, Pakistani authorities detained Ali for several hours after his arrival at Islamabad airport in October. He was later released and rejoined the delegation. However, on October 28, he was reportedly removed from a flight at Lahore airport as he attempted to return to Britain. Immigration officials allegedly informed him that his name appeared on a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) control list.

Kashmir Activism Raises Questions

Rochdale Borough Council said it believed Ali's detention was connected to his longstanding campaigning on Kashmir. The councillor has publicly criticised Pakistan's control over Pakistan-administered Kashmir, making his reported treatment particularly controversial. The Pakistani authorities have not publicly explained the reasons for his initial detention or the reported restriction on his departure. This lack of clarity has intensified concerns about whether political opinions and activism are influencing the treatment of individuals travelling to the country. The episode raises questions about the safeguards available to critics of government policy and whether administrative restrictions are being applied transparently and lawfully.

British Officials Seek Answers

The incident has prompted calls for intervention from British political figures. Labour MP Imran Hussain said he had raised the matter with government ministers and called for Ali's safe return to the United Kingdom. The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed that a British national had been detained and released and said it was in contact with local authorities. According to Ali's friend, Kashmiri writer Shams Rehman, the councillor was told that additional paperwork needed to be completed in Islamabad before he could leave Pakistan. Rehman indicated that Ali was not in custody and hoped to return to Britain once the formalities were completed.

Broader Concerns Over Civil Liberties

The incident comes amid continuing criticism of Pakistan's handling of protests and political dissent in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Activists have raised concerns about arrests, restrictions on reporting and internet disruptions during demonstrations. Although the circumstances of Ali's case remain unclear, his reported detention and travel restrictions have renewed questions about the space available for political criticism in Pakistan. For a country that regularly raises the Kashmir issue in international forums, the treatment of a British councillor who campaigns on Kashmir presents an uncomfortable challenge: concerns about political rights and freedom of expression cannot be addressed credibly without transparency and accountability at home.

Questions Remain Unanswered

The central questions are why Ali was detained, on what legal basis he was reportedly prevented from boarding his flight, and when he will be allowed to return to Britain. Until Pakistani authorities provide a clear explanation, the episode is likely to sustain criticism of the country's handling of dissent and its treatment of people expressing views that challenge official positions on Kashmir.
