Pakistan Train Disaster: 5 Dead, 30 Injured as All 14 Coaches of Passenger Express Derail

At least five people have been killed and 30 injured after all 14 coaches of Pakistan’s Rehman Baba Express derailed near Sher Shah Bridge in Multan, Punjab, early Tuesday morning. The train was travelling from Karachi to Peshawar when the accident occurred at around 5:15 a.m. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and transported injured passengers to Nishtar Hospital in Multan. Rescue operations continued as authorities worked to clear the damaged coaches. The incident has renewed concerns over the safety and reliability of Pakistan’s railway network. The country has experienced several derailments in recent months, raising questions about track conditions, maintenance standards and railway safety management.
A passenger reportedly said workers had repaired nuts and bolts on the ninth coach near Rohri before the derailment. However, authorities have not confirmed whether the reported repair had any connection to the accident. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to speed up rescue efforts and ensure medical treatment for the injured. An investigation is expected to establish what caused the train to leave the tracks.
The latest disaster adds to Pakistan Railways’ longstanding safety concerns. Previous deadly accidents have also prompted calls for better infrastructure, stronger maintenance procedures and greater accountability. With five lives lost and dozens injured, the key questions now are what caused the derailment, whether it could have been prevented, and what measures will be taken to reduce the risk of another tragedy.
