India’s National Investigation Agency has identified a Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba operative known by the alias “Langda” as the key mastermind behind the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, further intensifying scrutiny over Pakistan’s continued links to cross-border terrorism.

According to investigators, the accused has been named as accused number one in the NIA’s expanding probe into the attack, which targeted civilians and security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region. Officials believe the operative played a central role in planning, coordinating and directing the assault from across the border.

Security agencies say the accused is associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistan-based terror outfit long accused by India and several international agencies of orchestrating attacks in the region. Investigators reportedly traced communication patterns, handler networks and financial links connected to operatives based in Pakistan.

The development has once again revived concerns over terror infrastructure allegedly operating openly from Pakistani soil despite repeated international pressure on Islamabad to dismantle extremist networks. Indian officials have repeatedly accused Pakistan of providing safe havens and logistical support to groups targeting India.

The Pahalgam attack had triggered widespread outrage after militants opened fire in the tourist-heavy region, leaving multiple casualties and reigniting fears over renewed militant activity in Kashmir. Security agencies later launched an extensive crackdown to identify both local collaborators and foreign handlers linked to the operation.

Officials involved in the investigation claim evidence gathered so far points toward cross-border coordination involving Lashkar handlers based in Pakistan. Intelligence agencies are reportedly examining encrypted communications, movement patterns and funding channels connected to the accused operative.

Critics argue the case once again exposes Pakistan’s failure to curb terror groups despite years of promises to the international community. Analysts note that organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba continue to resurface under different names and fronts even after global sanctions and monitoring measures.

The naming of a Pakistan-based handler as the primary accused is expected to further strain already tense India-Pakistan relations. Security experts warn that continued militant attacks risk escalating regional instability and undermining diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

The NIA is expected to widen its probe in the coming weeks by tracking sleeper cells, overground workers and financial facilitators linked to the attack network. Officials say additional arrests and disclosures are likely as the investigation progresses.

The latest revelations have once again focused international attention on Pakistan’s longstanding struggle with extremist organisations and the persistent challenge of cross-border terrorism in South Asia.
