Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to visit Canada later this month, where she will participate in the first India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue, in a move expected to give fresh momentum to economic engagement between the two countries. Sitharaman is scheduled to arrive in Toronto on August 26 for a two-day visit. She will participate in the inaugural dialogue on August 27 alongside Canadian Finance Minister and Minister of National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne.

The meeting comes as India and Canada work to rebuild and expand their bilateral relationship following a period of diplomatic tensions. The launch of a dedicated economic and financial dialogue is being seen as an important step toward creating a more structured channel for discussions on trade, investment and financial cooperation. The two countries have been looking to increase economic engagement across several sectors. Financial services, investment, digital payments, fintech and capital markets are among the areas that could benefit from closer cooperation between the two sides.

Sitharaman is also expected to meet Canadian business leaders during her stay in Toronto. An interaction with corporate representatives is being organised by the Canada-India Business Council and the Confederation of Indian Industry. She is also scheduled to engage with Indo-Canadian chambers of commerce and community organisations.

These discussions are expected to provide an opportunity to examine the challenges faced by companies operating in both markets and identify new opportunities for investment and commercial partnerships. The financial relationship between India and Canada is already significant. Canadian institutional investors, including pension funds, have substantial investments in India, while Indian companies and professionals have developed a growing presence in the Canadian economy.

The visit also comes at a time when both countries are seeking progress on broader economic cooperation, including negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. A successful trade agreement could provide businesses with greater market access and help expand two-way commerce.

Beyond trade and finance, India and Canada have also identified areas such as energy, clean technology and critical minerals as potential fields for deeper cooperation. These sectors have become increasingly important as countries look to build more resilient supply chains and secure access to resources needed for modern industries. The Economic and Financial Dialogue could therefore serve as an important platform for turning the recent improvement in political relations into practical economic cooperation.

Sitharaman's Toronto visit is expected to be closely watched by businesses and investors in both countries. The focus will likely be on whether the inaugural dialogue can produce concrete progress and create a stronger foundation for long-term India-Canada economic ties. The meeting marks a significant development in the relationship and could set the tone for future cooperation between New Delhi and Ottawa on finance, investment and trade.
