Mumbai: Maharashtra politics witnessed another major development on Sunday after six Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (UBT) formally joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, dealing a significant blow to the camp headed by Uddhav Thackeray. The latest defections have intensified political tensions in the state, with leaders from the Shinde faction indicating that more leaders could follow the same path in the coming weeks. The six MPs announced their decision to align with the Shinde-led Sena, strengthening the faction's position at the national level and further widening the divide within the Shiv Sena, which split in 2022 following a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde.

Reacting to the development, leaders from the Shinde camp described the move as evidence of growing confidence in the party's leadership. Some senior leaders even suggested that the political realignment is far from over. State minister Uday Samant hinted at the possibility of additional defections, saying that the recent developments were only the beginning and that more "political explosions" could be seen in the near future. His remarks have triggered speculation about potential shifts involving legislators, local leaders and office-bearers associated with the Uddhav Thackeray faction.

The Shiv Sena (UBT), however, sought to downplay the impact of the defections. Party leaders maintained that the organisation remains strong and united despite the setback. The faction is expected to intensify outreach efforts among party workers and supporters to prevent further erosion of its political base.

Political observers believe the latest episode highlights the continuing struggle between the two factions for control over the Shiv Sena's legacy and voter support. Since the party's split, both groups have been competing for influence across Maharashtra, particularly in key urban and regional strongholds.

The defections also come at a time when political parties are preparing for upcoming electoral contests, making every shift in allegiance strategically important. While the immediate impact of the six MPs joining the Shinde camp is being assessed, attention has now turned to whether more leaders from the UBT faction will switch sides in the days ahead. With both camps attempting to consolidate their support base, Maharashtra's political landscape appears set for another round of intense political manoeuvring.
