Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Monday expressed concern about the weakening of democratic institutions in India and voiced support for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the Election Commission. Mufti also welcomed the filing of an FIR against Army personnel allegedly involved in assaulting a professor in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, saying such actions must be addressed seriously.

She emphasized that institutions in the country are being compromised, citing Gandhi’s claim about the suspicious surge in voter numbers between the Lok Sabha and Maharashtra assembly elections, which she believes warrants investigation. Mufti further alleged that even the Supreme Court was not immune to pressure, pointing to the BJP’s backlash over verdicts involving governors and Waqf matters. She criticized leaders like BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and the Vice-President for making remarks against the judiciary, suggesting a broader attempt to bring independent institutions under government control.

Reiterating her support for Rahul Gandhi, she said his concerns about the Election Commission being “compromised” are valid. Gandhi had made those remarks while addressing the Indian diaspora in Boston, highlighting irregularities in voter turnout and questioning the integrity of the electoral process. The BJP responded strongly, branding him a "traitor."

On the situation in West Bengal, Mufti said she advised the Muslim community to refrain from violent protests, warning that any unrest could be exploited by communal forces. She also raised concern over increasing threats to Muslim safety, citing the demolition of mosques and dargahs. In conclusion, Mufti expressed relief over the FIR in the Rajouri assault case, calling for accountability and preventive measures in such instances.
