A horrific crime has shaken Latur district after police found the burnt body of 35 year old Ganesh Gopinath Chavan inside a sack placed in his torched car on the Ausa Vanwada Road. Chavan, a loan recovery agent for ICICI Bank who was locally known for repossessing vehicles from defaulters, was identified by his family through a distinctive ring recovered from the scene. The incident, believed to have occurred late Saturday night, has triggered widespread concern about growing violence against finance sector field workers in rural areas.

The discovery came after emergency calls around 11:30 PM reported a car on fire. By the time police and fire officials arrived, the vehicle had been burning for hours. Chavan’s body was found forced into the driver’s seat, indicating that the attackers likely killed him, placed the body inside, and set the fuel drenched vehicle ablaze to erase evidence. When his phone remained unreachable on Sunday, relatives began searching, eventually leading to the grim identification. DNA confirmation is awaited as the investigation continues.

Although police have registered a case of unnatural death, the brutality of the act strongly suggests murder. Investigators are examining CCTV footage, call records, and Chavan’s recovery assignments, suspecting a possible link to disputes with borrowers angered by repossession actions. No arrests have been made so far, though a post mortem has been completed and the body handed over to the family.

The killing has highlighted the dangers faced by loan recovery workers across India, particularly as financial stress increases defaults and tensions. Similar past incidents in Maharashtra have shown how volatile such confrontations can become. Chavan’s death has renewed calls for stronger safety measures, including team based field visits, live location tracking, and conflict mediation, as authorities promise swift action to prevent further violence.
