LPU Unrest: Punjab CM Directs Strict Action, Internet Services Suspended Near Campus

Tension continued at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara after student protests over an unverified sexual assault allegation escalated into violence, vandalism and disruption of traffic. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed Punjab Police chief Gaurav Yadav to visit the university and ordered strict action against those found responsible for the unrest. Internet services were suspended in and around the university as authorities increased security following the protests. A large police contingent was deployed near the campus to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order.

The protests began after allegations concerning the sexual assault of a female student circulated among students and on social media. The claims triggered anger on the campus, with students demanding answers and action from the university authorities. However, the allegation has not been established by investigators. The university has denied the claims circulating online, while police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the facts.

The situation became tense when the demonstrations turned violent. Reports said protesters damaged property on the university campus, while incidents involving fire and stone-pelting were also reported. A section of the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway was blocked during the unrest, causing disruption to traffic in the area. Police subsequently moved in to clear the road and strengthen security around the university.

The Punjab government has taken the developments seriously, with Chief Minister Mann asking the police leadership to personally assess the situation. Authorities are also investigating the circumstances that led to the protests and the subsequent violence.

LPU has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice. Students who wish to return to their hometowns have been advised to consult their parents or guardians before leaving the campus. Students who remain at the university have been asked to stay in their hostels or residences and avoid unnecessary movement.

A Special Investigation Team has also been formed to examine the allegations and events surrounding the protests. Investigators are examining available evidence, including CCTV footage and other material, as they work to establish what happened. The university has maintained that several claims circulating on social media are false, while police have said the investigation will determine the facts. With additional security forces deployed and academic activities temporarily suspended, authorities are now focused on restoring normalcy at the LPU campus and preventing further violence.
