LPG Tanker Carrying 9 Indians Struck by Drone Near Strait of Hormuz, Crew Safe

A Liberia-flagged LPG tanker carrying nine Indian nationals was hit by a drone while sailing near the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report from the Directorate of Maritime Administration. The incident took place as the vessel was travelling eastward outside the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened security concerns in the wider Gulf region.

The vessel, identified as M.T. Al Maryah, had 19 crew members on board, including nine Indians. All members of the crew were reported to be safe following the incident. The tanker also remained operational, with its main engine and power systems continuing to function after the reported drone strike. The LPG carrier proceeded to Khor Fakkan on the UAE's eastern coast, where it anchored safely. No major damage to the vessel was reported in connection with the incident.

The development comes at a time when commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz is facing increased security risks. The waterway is a crucial maritime route for global energy supplies, making any disruption in the region a concern for shipping companies, seafarers and energy markets.

The maritime administration has also been monitoring the situation involving Indian nationals working aboard vessels in the region. According to the report, six Indian-flagged vessels and seven foreign-flagged vessels of Indian interest were operating in the Persian Gulf, west of the Strait of Hormuz. Together, these vessels were carrying around 145 Indian seafarers. Authorities have also identified nine vessels of Indian interest for possible evacuation from the affected area. These include seven vessels carrying fertiliser cargo and two other ships.

The latest incident has renewed attention on the safety of Indian seafarers working on commercial vessels in the Gulf. While the drone strike on the M.T. Al Maryah did not result in reported casualties, the incident highlights the risks faced by merchant ships operating near areas affected by regional tensions. The immediate situation remained under control, with all 19 crew members safe and the vessel successfully anchored at Khor Fakkan.
