Kolkata Warehouse Collapse Death Toll Climbs to 16 as Rescue Operations Continue for Fourth Day

The death toll in the Kolkata warehouse collapse has increased to 16 after an injured victim succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Saturday. Meanwhile, rescue operations entered the fourth day as teams from multiple agencies continued searching through the debris to confirm that no one remains trapped under the collapsed structure, officials said.
Rescue personnel are using advanced methods, including cameras inserted beneath the rubble, to locate possible survivors. Authorities are also analysing mobile tower data to track the last known locations of people whose phones are still active but remain buried under the debris. An official involved in the operation said the immediate focus remains on completing the search and rescue mission. Teams are carefully examining every section of the collapsed warehouse, and large-scale debris removal will begin only after rescuers are completely certain that no trapped individuals or victims remain inside.
A senior state government official confirmed that the latest casualty was identified as Khalek Sardar from Basanti, who was receiving treatment in a hospital. With his death, the number of fatalities reached 16, while 17 others are still undergoing medical care. Authorities said rescue efforts are being carried out with extreme caution to protect emergency workers and ensure that every possible victim is accounted for before moving to the next phase of clearance.
The rescue operation was further strengthened on Friday when the Indian Railways joined the efforts after the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) requested assistance in cutting and removing heavy twisted metal structures obstructing the search. The under-construction warehouse collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a major emergency response. Among those recovered from the site was the body of the main contractor, who was listed among the five individuals named in the FIR filed in connection with the incident. The police have set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the cause of the collapse and determine whether any negligence or safety violations contributed to the tragedy.
