India’s naval ship INS Nireekshak has reached Colombo to take part in the fourth edition of the India–Sri Lanka bilateral diving exercise, IN-SLN DIVEX 2026, being held from April 21 to April 27. According to a Ministry of Defence release issued on Wednesday, the vessel arrived in Sri Lanka on April 21.
The week-long exercise will see diving teams from both the Indian and Sri Lankan navies engage in specialised underwater operations and training activities. The objective is to improve interoperability, enhance coordination, and enable the exchange of expertise between the two forces.
On arrival, INS Nireekshak was formally welcomed by the Sri Lankan Navy with a ceremonial reception, including a naval band. The ship’s Commanding Officer, Commander Sailesh Tyagi, also held discussions with Rear Admiral SJ Kumara, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Area, focusing on areas of mutual interest and opportunities for greater collaboration.
In addition to operational activities, the visit will feature social events, sports matches, and joint yoga sessions aimed at building goodwill and strengthening ties between naval personnel. As part of India’s humanitarian efforts, the ship will hand over two BHISM cubes under the Aarogya Maitri initiative. These portable medical units can manage up to 200 emergency cases and are equipped with essential medicines and basic surgical facilities.
To further support maritime security cooperation, the Indian Navy will also provide 50,000 rounds of 9 mm ammunition to Sri Lanka. The IN-SLN DIVEX exercise highlights the strong maritime partnership between the two nations and reflects their shared commitment to stability and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region. It also aligns with India’s MAHASAGAR vision, which promotes collective growth and regional security.
