India’s exports to the United States have remained broadly resilient despite a year of tariff uncertainty under US President Donald Trump, with the American market continuing to play a major role in India’s overseas trade. The past year has seen repeated changes in US tariff policy, creating concerns among Indian exporters about higher costs, weaker competitiveness and the possibility of losing market share. Despite those challenges, the US has continued to account for a significant portion of India’s merchandise exports.

The resilience is notable because the Trump administration introduced a series of tariff measures affecting Indian products. The US initially announced a 26% reciprocal tariff on imports from India in April 2025. Tariff rates were subsequently revised, with some Indian goods facing substantially higher duties during the period of uncertainty.

The changing tariff environment has particularly concerned labour-intensive industries such as textiles, apparel, gems and jewellery, seafood and other manufactured goods, where exporters often operate on relatively narrow margins. Higher duties can increase the final price of Indian products in the US and make competition from suppliers in other countries more difficult.

Indian exporters have continued to maintain their presence in the American market. Established business relationships, strong demand for several Indian products and the difficulty of quickly finding alternative markets have helped limit the impact of the tariff measures. The US remains particularly important because American buyers have long been major customers for Indian pharmaceutical products, engineering goods, electronics, chemicals, textiles and other manufactured products. Building comparable markets elsewhere requires time, investment and new distribution networks.

India has been working to reduce its dependence on the US by expanding trade opportunities in other parts of the world. New Delhi has been pursuing trade agreements and negotiations with countries including the United Kingdom, members of the European Union and several other markets.

For Indian exporters, diversification could provide a safeguard against future changes in US trade policy. Rather than abandoning the American market, companies are increasingly looking at a strategy that combines continued US exports with greater access to other international markets. The latest trend also highlights the complexity of the India-US trade relationship. Tariffs have increased uncertainty, but they have not erased the underlying demand for Indian goods in the United States. The US continues to be a crucial destination for Indian exporters. The ability of India’s export sector to maintain its position despite significant tariff disruptions suggests that the two countries remain deeply connected through trade.

The coming months are likely to be important as both governments continue discussions on tariffs and market access. For exporters, greater clarity on US trade policy could help businesses make longer-term decisions on pricing, production and investment. While Trump’s tariff policies have created challenges for Indian exporters, the US market has so far remained remarkably important to India’s export economy, underscoring the strength and depth of commercial ties between the two countries.
