New Delhi – In a significant diplomatic milestone, India and Qatar have elevated their bilateral ties to a strategic partnership, reinforcing cooperation in trade, energy, investments, innovation, technology, food security, and cultural exchanges. The two nations also signed a revised agreement to prevent double taxation and fiscal evasion related to income taxes.
The agreements were finalized following comprehensive discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, covering a wide range of global and regional concerns. Both leaders exchanged views on pressing geopolitical issues, including the Israel-Hamas conflict and the situation in Afghanistan. Addressing the media, MEA Secretary Arun Kumar Chatterjee confirmed that the discussions included an in-depth review of developments in West Asia, with both nations appreciating each other’s perspectives on the ongoing conflicts.
Beyond geopolitical concerns, economic collaboration took center stage, with talks on a potential India-Qatar Free Trade Agreement (FTA), separate from the broader India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) FTA. Strengthening economic ties between the two nations remains a key priority.
Demonstrating the warmth in bilateral relations, Prime Minister Modi personally welcomed Sheikh Tamim at the airport, breaking standard protocol. The formal engagements began with a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the Qatari leader was received by President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi, and senior government ministers. The Qatari Amir also met with ministers and officials, emphasizing the growing importance of India-Qatar ties.
Sheikh Tamim is leading a high-level delegation, including ministers, senior officials, and business leaders, to explore new avenues of cooperation. This visit marks his first official trip to India since 2015 and is expected to bolster the multifaceted partnership between the two nations. India and Qatar share a historically strong relationship, built on deep cultural and economic ties. This visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation, ensuring continued engagement at the highest levels of government.
