Technology giant Google on tuesday announced $400,000 in funding in India to support initiatives leveraging MedGemma, a suite of open-source, medically specialized vision-language foundation models, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of healthcare providers in the country. “As an initial step, Ajna Lens will collaborate with experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to develop models addressing India-specific use cases in dermatology and outpatient department (OPD) triaging. These models will contribute to India’s digital public infrastructure, and their outputs will be made available to the broader ecosystem,” Google stated.

In addition, Google plans to partner with the National Health Authority (NHA) to deploy advanced AI for converting medical records into Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards, an internationally recognized, machine-readable format. According to the company, this transformation is expected to help patients better understand their medical information, reduce administrative burdens for patients and hospitals, and support data-driven policymaking for India’s public healthcare strategy.

Google is also working to list over 400,000 NHA-registered health facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic labs, on Google Maps and Search, enabling users to easily locate and navigate to nearby health centres with the latest official information. Meanwhile, Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, announced $8 million in funding to establish four centres of excellence at the Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) and the Indian Institutes of Technology in Kanpur, Ropar, and Madras.
