Kerala Chief Minister and Finance Minister VD Satheesan on Friday presented the UDF government's first Budget for 2026–27, laying out a five-year strategy to build a "New Era Keralam" through improvements in healthcare, education, job creation, social welfare, and infrastructure. Describing the Budget as a blueprint for the state's development agenda, Satheesan said it would guide welfare and growth initiatives over the next five years. He noted that the UDF government had assumed office with a strong public mandate and was committed to addressing key challenges through reforms, technological advancement, and investments in both social and physical infrastructure.

According to the Chief Minister, the government's vision is to strengthen healthcare and education by leveraging modern technology, expand employment opportunities, enhance support for senior citizens, and accelerate infrastructure development across the state. Satheesan acknowledged that despite Kerala's long-standing achievements in social development, several critical sectors are facing mounting pressures. He pointed out that progress in social indicators has stagnated in recent years, while youth unemployment remains a significant concern.

Highlighting steps already taken by the government, he said key commitments under the six Indira Guarantees have been implemented despite fiscal constraints. These measures include free travel for women on KSRTC buses, the establishment of a dedicated department for senior citizens, and increased honorariums for ASHA workers, anganwadi staff, helpers, and teachers. He added that greater investment in health and education would help position Kerala as a leading destination for development and opportunities.

The Chief Minister also underscored the state's changing demographic trends, noting that the proportion of young people is shrinking while many continue to migrate overseas for employment. He stressed the need for a comprehensive study of these demographic shifts and emphasized creating quality education and job opportunities to encourage young people to contribute to the state's progress.

Addressing the challenges posed by an ageing population and economic transformation, Satheesan said the government plans to strengthen services for senior citizens while promoting a "silver economy" that harnesses their experience and skills. He added that Kerala's financial and structural challenges require innovative solutions, and the government will seek to attract large-scale investments, boost public revenues, and ensure more equitable economic growth.
