Chief Justice Says 'Ignore' Courtroom Outburst After Litigant Abused Him, Threw Papers During Hearing

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has urged people to "ignore" the recent courtroom outburst in which a litigant allegedly abused him and threw papers inside the Supreme Court, saying such isolated incidents should not distract from the dignity of the country's constitutional institutions. Speaking about the episode, the Chief Justice emphasized that preserving the credibility of the judiciary is a collective responsibility. He suggested that undue attention should not be given to individual acts of misconduct that seek to disrupt court proceedings.

The incident occurred during a hearing before a Supreme Court bench when a petitioner, appearing in person, sought directions for the registration of an FIR against a senior police officer. According to reports, the hearing took an unexpected turn after the petitioner became agitated while presenting his case. Witnesses said the individual allegedly used abusive language against the Chief Justice and threw papers inside the courtroom, briefly disrupting the proceedings. Supreme Court security personnel quickly intervened and escorted him out, allowing the hearing to continue without further disturbance.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the bench did not immediately initiate contempt proceedings against the petitioner. Instead, the judges reportedly observed that the individual appeared to be under considerable emotional distress and opted for a restrained response rather than taking punitive action on the spot.

The courtroom disruption drew sharp criticism from members of the legal fraternity. Bar associations condemned the behavior, describing it as unacceptable and stressing that maintaining decorum inside courtrooms is essential for the smooth functioning of the justice system. Legal experts noted that while litigants have the right to seek legal remedies and challenge decisions through established judicial processes, courtroom proceedings must be conducted with respect and discipline. Any attempt to intimidate judges or interrupt hearings undermines the administration of justice and the confidence of the public in judicial institutions.
