New India on Tuesday paid tribute to Param Vir Chakra awardee Captain Vikram Batra, one of the most celebrated heroes of the 1999 Kargil War, on his martyrdom anniversary. Political leaders, members of the armed forces, veterans, and citizens across the country remembered his extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.

Captain Vikram Batra, an officer of the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, played a decisive role during Operation Vijay, the Indian military campaign launched to evict Pakistani intruders from strategic heights in the Kargil sector. His leadership in the successful capture of Point 5140 became one of the defining moments of the conflict.

Following the victory, Captain Batra's now-iconic words, "Yeh Dil Maange More," came to symbolize the determination and fighting spirit of the Indian Army. He later volunteered for another high-risk mission to recapture Point 4875, where he displayed exceptional bravery while leading his troops under heavy enemy fire.

During the operation, Captain Batra was martyred while attempting to rescue a fellow officer and continuing the assault against enemy positions. His actions were widely credited with contributing significantly to the success of the mission. For his exceptional gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest wartime gallantry award.

Messages honouring the fallen soldier poured in from across the country, with leaders and defence officials describing him as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and selfless service. Tributes were also paid at war memorials and military establishments, where his legacy continues to inspire serving personnel and future generations. Captain Batra, who hailed from Palampur in Himachal Pradesh, remains one of the most respected figures in the history of the Indian Armed Forces. The Kargil War, fought between India and Pakistan from May to July 1999, saw Indian forces reclaim several strategic mountain peaks occupied by Pakistani soldiers and infiltrators along the Line of Control.
