Bangladesh is reportedly moving ahead with plans to strengthen its air defence capabilities through a potential deal with China for the acquisition of J-10CE multi-role fighter aircraft. Reports suggest that Dhaka is considering the purchase of 24 advanced fighter jets as part of growing military cooperation between the two countries. The proposed deal is expected to gain momentum during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s ongoing visit to China, which began on Monday. Officials familiar with the discussions have indicated that the agreement could potentially be finalised by August this year, marking a major development in Bangladesh-China defence relations.

The J-10CE fighter jets are estimated to cost around $40 million each. A Chinese delegation recently visited Dhaka to speed up negotiations, while Bangladeshi representatives are scheduled to hold discussions with senior Chinese officials, including foreign and defence authorities, to work out the remaining details of the agreement. The defence talks are part of a larger diplomatic effort aimed at expanding cooperation between Dhaka and Beijing. During the visit, Bangladesh and China are expected to sign a series of agreements covering multiple sectors, including trade, infrastructure, economic cooperation, and strategic partnerships.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary described China as a trusted friend, strategic partner, and important economic ally. He highlighted that bilateral relations have developed into a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership based on shared interests, mutual respect, and long-term collaboration. Apart from defence cooperation, discussions during the visit are also expected to include major infrastructure initiatives such as the Teesta project. Bangladesh has also expressed support for several key global initiatives introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Military cooperation remains one of the important areas of focus during the visit, alongside economic and development-related engagements. The proposed fighter jet purchase reflects Dhaka’s broader efforts to modernise its armed forces and diversify its defence partnerships. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit also includes participation in the 17th Annual Meeting of the New Champions, popularly known as “Summer Davos”, organised by the World Economic Forum in Dalian, China. The event brings together international leaders, policymakers, business figures, and experts to discuss issues including global economic growth, technology, and sustainable development.

During the summit, Rahman is expected to meet leaders from several countries, including Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Vietnam, and South Korea, while also holding additional talks with Chinese officials. He is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at a session focused on climate leadership and global environmental challenges. The visit highlights Bangladesh’s ambition to deepen cooperation with China across defence, commerce, investment, and infrastructure sectors while strengthening its position in international forums.
