Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that opposition AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam has been arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan’s involvement in the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, mostly of tourists. Sarma said a video surfaced showing the MLA defending Pakistan, prompting him to direct the police to take immediate action. The MLA has been taken into custody and will be presented in court, with the case pursued to its conclusion, he added.

Additionally, Sarma revealed that a Congress MP from Assam is under investigation for suspected links to Pakistan. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police is examining the matter and plans to summon the MP and their family for questioning in June or July. According to the CM, there is evidence suggesting the MP’s wife was receiving a salary from Pakistan while employed in Delhi.

Without naming the individual, Sarma claimed the MP stayed in Pakistan for 15 days without notifying the central government, entering through the Atari land border to avoid detection. He also mentioned that the MP visited Nepal around the same period, a time when Pakistani intelligence agency ISI was notably active there. Sarma suggested the visits might be linked and said the SIT will investigate thoroughly. If necessary, central agencies may take over the probe after the state police completes its part.
