Arunachal Governor, GOC 101 Area Review Civil-Military Coordination and Disaster Response Preparedness

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik met General Officer Commanding (GOC) 101 Area Lt Gen Mohit Waghwa at Lok Bhavan in Itanagar, with discussions focusing on logistics, civil-military coordination and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) preparedness in the North-East. During Friday’s meeting, the Governor acknowledged the contribution of the Shillong-based 101 Area in supporting combat logistics and facilitating operational coordination across the region. He also praised the formation for its timely assistance during natural disasters such as floods and landslides, particularly its role in rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations for affected communities.

Given Arunachal Pradesh’s strategic significance, Lt Gen Parnaik emphasised the importance of closer coordination among the Armed Forces, state authorities and civil administration. He said stronger cooperation would help improve disaster response capabilities while also supporting wider public welfare initiatives.

The Governor also called for improvements in key infrastructure, including transport routes, communication systems and administrative facilities, particularly those supporting troop movement and logistics in border areas. A significant part of the discussion focused on the welfare of ex-servicemen and Veer Naris. The Governor urged the Army to strengthen support mechanisms, including easier access to the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), greater empanelment of healthcare facilities in the state and better access to existing welfare schemes.

He further highlighted the need for stronger resettlement and skill-development programmes, educational support for the children of veterans, pension-related assistance and employment opportunities for retired personnel. To improve awareness and access to benefits, he suggested holding regular awareness camps and medical outreach programmes in remote locations, along with closer coordination between the Rajya Sainik Board and Zila Sainik Boards. Lt Gen Waghwa assured the Governor that the Indian Army would continue working closely with the state authorities and remain committed to supporting the security, development and welfare of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.

Governor Visits Armed Forces Goodwill Enclosures in Ziro: Separately, Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik visited the Armed Forces Goodwill Enclosures at Ziro in Lower Subansiri district, where he reviewed initiatives aimed at connecting local communities with the Armed Forces. The Governor appreciated the efforts of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to raise public awareness and motivate young people to consider careers in the Armed Forces.

During the visit, he toured several displays, including the ‘Know Your Army’, equipment display, BRO, Indian Air Force, NCC and Sainik School stalls. The exhibits offered visitors an opportunity to learn more about defence capabilities as well as educational and career opportunities associated with military service. Interacting with visitors, the Governor said such programmes can help strengthen the relationship between the Armed Forces and local communities. He also encouraged young people to learn about the opportunities and responsibilities involved in serving the country and to consider a career in the Armed Forces with dedication and commitment.
