WASHINGTON — Following what seems to be the second assassination attempt on his life in two months, Donald Trump’s campaign and supporters confirmed that he will proceed with his planned events this week and is likely to continue golfing.
On Monday (Sept 16), Trump largely stayed out of the spotlight as more information about the incident surfaced. He met with the acting head of the US Secret Service at his Palm Beach home, gave an interview to the media, and made a brief comment about the situation on Truth Social.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump suggested without evidence that the suspected gunman was influenced by Democrats’ "highly inflammatory language," and he echoed this sentiment in a heated social media post.
"Due to this Communist Left Rhetoric, the bullets are flying, and things will only get worse!" Trump wrote.
His campaign issued a statement via email, citing earlier remarks by Democratic presidential candidates Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden, and other Democrats as contributing factors to the suspected assassination attempt.
Harris and Biden condemned the attack on Sunday, with Harris stating on X, "Violence has no place in America." Biden also had a conversation with Trump on Monday.
Trump has a history of using provocative rhetoric, including racist and sexist language, and has made false claims about immigrants in the past.
Allies of Trump expressed frustration that a gunman managed to get within 500 yards of him while he was golfing in West Palm Beach.
"Trump needs a full Secret Service detail, just like when he was president," said Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville. "Without it, we risk a disaster."
There is no indication that this latest incident will significantly alter Trump's campaign schedule or strategy, with the election just seven weeks away.
Following a previous assassination attempt at a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump’s campaign briefly paused outdoor events, and his speeches are now mostly given behind bulletproof glass.
Trump is still expected to launch a cryptocurrency venture at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday night and proceed with planned events including a town hall in Flint, Michigan, on Tuesday, a rally in New York on Wednesday, and another rally in North Carolina on Saturday, all at indoor venues.
It is uncertain whether Trump will continue golfing, but a close associate mentioned that the Secret Service might struggle to keep him away from the course.
"It's his primary way of relieving stress," the associate noted.
