CHONBURI, Thailand — Moo Deng, the baby hippo from Thailand who has become an internet sensation, is causing unexpected crowds at her zoo, located two hours south of Bangkok.
The name Moo Deng, which translates to "bouncing pig" in Thai, is now synonymous with viral fame, as millions of social media followers watch her endearing escapades, including her playful attempts to nibble at her handler despite her lack of teeth.
Typically, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province sees around 800 visitors per day during weekdays and the rainy season. However, the zoo is now attracting between 3,000 and 4,000 visitors on weekdays and welcomed 20,000 guests over the weekend, primarily to catch a glimpse of Moo Deng.
Zoo director Narungwit Chodchoy mentioned, "Moo Deng fever means we need to improve our organization to ensure all visitors can see her."
On the morning of September 16, Moo Deng, who was enjoying a bowl of vegetables and snacks, continued to capture hearts. Her siblings are named Pork Stew and Sweet Pork.
Visitor Ekaphak Mahasawad, 45, shared, "I left Bangkok at 6:30 this morning just to see Moo Deng. I’m here solely for her."
Moo Deng’s grandmother, Malee, recently marked her 59th birthday as Thailand’s oldest hippo.
