President-elect Donald Trump has intensified his rhetoric around the potential seizure of Greenland and the Panama Canal, labeling both as crucial to the United States’ national security. His comments have raised eyebrows internationally, with Denmark and Panama firmly rejecting any suggestion of relinquishing control over their territories.
At a press conference, Mr. Trump was asked whether he could rule out the use of military or economic force to take over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, or the Panama Canal. He declined to provide assurances, stating, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two... but I can say this, we need them for economic security.” This declaration has fueled concerns about the possible escalation of geopolitical tensions.
Mr. Trump also suggested the use of "economic force" when discussing the prospect of annexing Canada, dismissing the US-Canada border as an "artificially drawn line." These remarks signal a dramatic shift in tone regarding the United States’ relationship with its northern neighbor.
Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Mr. Trump used the occasion to criticize a variety of domestic and international policies. He took aim at environmental regulations, called for reforms to the US electoral system, and even proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," a suggestion that has sparked further debate.
The controversial comments have been widely reported, with BBC’s Reeta Chakrabarti presenting the story during News at Ten, featuring reporting by Sarah Smith. The remarks have prompted sharp reactions and underscored the unconventional approach Mr. Trump plans to bring to his presidency.
