A current Paralympic champion has informed BBC News that improvements are needed in NHS prosthetics to support the development of Great Britain's "next generation" of gold medallists. Runner Richard Whitehead, speaking before the Paris Paralympics, criticized the UK health service's prosthetics as "not fit for purpose," citing their limitations in movement and potential to cause discomfort and skin irritation during running. The NHS does not regularly provide sports prosthetics, or activity limbs, for adults. NHS England argues that many fitness activities can still be pursued without specialized sports prosthetics. The cost of lower-limb prosthetics can range widely, from £1,000 to over £50,000.
