A violent incident in New Orleans, Louisiana, early on New Year’s Day left 15 people dead and at least 35 others injured when a man drove a pickup truck into a crowded street. The suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, reportedly exited his vehicle and opened fire before being fatally shot by police officers at the scene. Authorities are now investigating the attack as an act of terrorism, with the FBI indicating that Jabbar was not acting alone.
Jabbar, a US citizen born in Texas, had a criminal record linked to traffic offenses and theft. He had also served in the US Army before working in real estate, holding a license that had expired in 2021. Law enforcement officials revealed that an Islamic State (ISIS) flag was found inside Jabbar’s vehicle, along with two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) located nearby. These findings have led investigators to suspect that the attack may have been coordinated, with further details suggesting possible terrorist ties.
The FBI’s Alethea Duncan confirmed that the agency does not believe Jabbar was "solely responsible" for the attack, signaling that other potential accomplices could be involved. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the plot and whether other individuals are connected to the tragedy. This brutal incident has raised significant concerns about the threat of terrorism and the safety of public spaces, particularly in light of the extremist materials reportedly linked to the attack.
