Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old suspect in an attempted assassination of Donald Trump, appeared in federal court after being apprehended near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Routh allegedly waited for over 11 hours, armed with a rifle, before a Secret Service agent spotted him, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Trump was evacuated without injury, and Routh fled the scene, only to be caught later.
Court records reveal Routh has prior felony convictions, and authorities are investigating the motive behind the incident. His actions are currently being prosecuted for firearm possession by a felon and carrying a gun with an obliterated serial number, though an attempted assassination charge could follow pending further evidence. Cell phone data indicated that Routh was positioned near the golf course early in the morning, hinting at premeditation.
Secret Service agents discovered food near the site, indicating he may have camped out while awaiting Trump's arrival. Routh did not fire his weapon before the Secret Service intervened, and no shots were fired from his side, although he fled in a stolen vehicle before being captured. Officials are continuing to investigate his social media presence, digital footprints, and any potential links to extremist groups or ideologies.
In court, Routh chose to remain silent, with his defense appointed by the court due to his indigent status. The charges against him are currently firearm-related, but further investigations may lead to more severe charges depending on the findings. His next hearing is scheduled for September 23, where decisions on additional counts or charges will be made.
