Ahead of the verdict in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case, the victim's parents have raised concerns over the investigation, claiming it remains incomplete. They allege that others involved in the crime are still free, roaming without fear. The victim, a young doctor, was found dead in the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar hospital on August 9 last year, sparking widespread outrage and protests.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 and charged with the crime. The trial concluded on January 9, and the Sealdah court is set to deliver its verdict on Saturday. While the victim’s mother is confident that Roy will be convicted, she is vocal about her belief that other perpetrators have not yet been caught. She added that she had witnessed them loitering in the hospital and described the investigation as incomplete.
"While Roy is guilty, there are other criminals who remain free. I’ve seen them walking around in the hospital. This investigation is far from over," she told PTI. She also expressed her disappointment in the handling of evidence, claiming that much of it had been tampered with. According to her, the scene was chaotic when police officials, including the then-Police Commissioner Vineet Goel, visited the crime site, with people present and photographs circulating online.
The mother also questioned the motives behind her daughter's brutal killing, suggesting that she may have discovered something the authorities wanted to keep hidden. "I still don’t know why my daughter had to die like this. What did she find out that led to her murder?" she said.
The victim's father echoed similar sentiments, asserting that Roy was not the sole perpetrator. He remains hopeful that those still at large will be caught and held accountable. "Justice has not been served yet. There are others involved, and I believe they will eventually be arrested," he added.
The parents, despite their grief, have expressed trust in the judicial system and plan to attend the verdict hearing. If Roy is convicted, he could face either the death penalty or life imprisonment, with the CBI—who took over the investigation from the Calcutta High Court—seeking capital punishment. The agency has stated that Roy is the only person responsible for the crime.
Reflecting on their journey, the victim's mother shared the pain of losing a daughter who had a promising future. "We come from a modest background. We worked hard to give her the best education, and she was so talented. But our fight for justice is far from over," she said, her days spent mourning in front of her daughter’s photograph.
