UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has shared a light-hearted exchange with injured flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar, offering to train him in combat techniques after he recovers from his injuries. The interaction took place during a ceremony recognising the bravery of the airline's crew following a serious onboard incident in September.

During the meeting, the president noticed Machchhar's injuries, including stitches on his head and an injured arm. When he asked the captain how long his recovery would take, Machchhar reportedly said it could take around two months. The president then suggested that they arrange a training session once he was fit again, prompting a friendly exchange between the two. The meeting also highlighted the UAE leadership's appreciation for the crew members who responded during the incident. The pilots and other crew members were honoured for their courage and contribution to passenger safety.

The incident involved flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30. According to media reports, Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot with an emergency crash axe, leaving him seriously injured. The situation required urgent intervention from others aboard the aircraft. Despite the emergency, the aircraft landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after the crew and two off-duty pilots on board helped manage the situation.

As part of the recognition, the crew members received the First Class Order of Zayed II, a UAE honour acknowledging their bravery and service. The ceremony served as an opportunity for the country's leadership to recognise the people involved in managing the crisis. The president's conversation with Machchhar added a personal touch to the formal event. Beyond the official recognition, the exchange reflected the support extended to the captain as he continues his recovery.

The episode has also drawn attention to the challenges faced by aviation professionals during unexpected emergencies. While pilots undergo extensive training to handle technical problems and other operational risks, a violent incident involving a fellow crew member presents an exceptionally difficult situation. The recognition of Machchhar and his colleagues underscores the importance of teamwork, quick decision-making and preparedness in protecting passengers. As the captain recovers, the UAE leadership's gesture has become another notable moment in the aftermath of the September incident.
