Project Kusha M1 Interceptor Successfully Completes Wind Tunnel Testing at NAL

Project Kusha’s M1 interceptor missile has completed an important phase of wind tunnel testing at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in the development of India’s indigenous long-range air defence capability. The M1 interceptor is designed to engage aerial threats at ranges of up to 150 kilometres, including highly manoeuvrable fighter aircraft and cruise missiles. During the NAL trials, the missile was tested under simulated high-speed airflow conditions to evaluate its aerodynamic stability, manoeuvrability and overall flight characteristics.

Engineers examined key parameters such as drag, lift-to-drag performance, control-surface behaviour and airflow around the missile. The tests also assessed the design of the nose cone and fins to determine whether they can maintain stability during supersonic flight. The behaviour of the dual-pulse rocket motor’s exhaust flow was also studied as part of the aerodynamic evaluation.

Data collected during the wind tunnel campaign will help validate earlier computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and refine the missile’s design ahead of its planned flight trials. Combining computer-based modelling with physical testing is an important part of modern missile development, allowing engineers to identify and address potential aerodynamic issues before live launches.

The M1 is part of Project Kusha’s planned three-layered air defence architecture. While the M1 is intended to cover shorter engagement ranges, the M2 and M3 variants are expected to provide progressively longer-range interception capabilities. The use of a common kill vehicle across the variants, combined with different booster configurations, is intended to provide greater flexibility in responding to different types of aerial threats.

Project Kusha is reportedly being developed at an estimated cost of around ₹21,700 crore. The programme initially aims to provide five squadrons to the Indian Air Force, with the possibility of increasing deployment to ten squadrons in the future. The programme also reflects India’s growing emphasis on domestic defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Indian companies and defence organisations are contributing to different aspects of the system, including propulsion, electronics and system integration.

A successful indigenous long-range air defence system could strengthen India’s strategic autonomy by reducing dependence on imported platforms and ensuring greater control over upgrades, maintenance and long-term support. Integration with the Indian Air Force’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) could also allow Project Kusha to operate alongside existing systems such as Akash and Barak-8.

The wind tunnel trials at NAL are therefore an important technical step for Project Kusha. While additional testing will be required before the M1 interceptor can enter operational service, the latest milestone demonstrates India’s growing capability to design, simulate and physically validate advanced air defence technologies within the country.
