NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar faced heckling and an attempted attack by Khalistani extremists in London on Thursday (IST) as he was leaving an event at the Chatham House think tank. A widely circulated video shows a man running toward Jaishankar’s vehicle and tearing the Indian national flag in front of London police officers. Despite the act of vandalism, the officers did not intervene. Pro-Khalistan supporters were also seen waving their flag and protesting outside the venue where Jaishankar participated in a discussion.
The incident occurred during Jaishankar’s official visit to the UK from March 4-9, aimed at strengthening the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership. His agenda includes discussions with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other key officials, covering areas such as trade, health, education, people-to-people ties, and defence cooperation.
Jaishankar’s visit comes at a time of increasing tensions between India and pro-Khalistan groups abroad. In recent years, such groups have staged protests outside Indian diplomatic missions, raising concerns over security threats to Indian officials overseas. The London incident further underscores the challenges faced by Indian diplomats in engaging with global partners while addressing extremist activities targeting India’s interests.
Following his UK engagements, Jaishankar will travel to Ireland from March 6-7, where he is scheduled to meet Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris, interact with other officials, and engage with the Indian diaspora. His discussions in Ireland are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and expanding educational and technological partnerships. This visit marks an important step in India’s diplomatic outreach to Europe, reinforcing ties with key allies while addressing global challenges, including security and economic partnerships.
