India Hits Back at UN Committee Report, Calls References 'Politically Motivated'

India has strongly rejected remarks made in a recent report by a United Nations committee, describing some of the references as “politically motivated” and “highly malicious.” New Delhi also criticised what it termed broad generalisations and allegations that were not supported by evidence.

The response followed the publication of a press release by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD) after its review of India’s 11th periodic report under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India participated in the review process with a commitment to constructive engagement. During the proceedings, the Indian delegation highlighted the country’s constitutional safeguards, legal protections, pluralistic character and various measures aimed at supporting disadvantaged communities.

Jaiswal said an inter-ministerial delegation led by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had already responded to several concerns raised during the review. According to the MEA, the delegation rejected what it considered sweeping generalisations, unsubstantiated allegations and observations that appeared to extend beyond the committee’s mandate under the Convention. “India rejects any politically motivated highly malicious references in the report with all the contempt that it deserves,” Jaiswal said while responding to media questions.

The spokesperson added that India would address the committee’s observations through the established procedure. The Indian Mission in Geneva has also issued a detailed statement presenting New Delhi’s position following the CERD review. The development comes as India continues to engage with international human rights mechanisms while emphasising its constitutional framework, democratic institutions and legal safeguards.
