HAL and Safran Finalise SAFHAL Contract to Develop and Produce Indigenous Aravalli Helicopter Engine

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a final agreement with their joint venture, SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd., to undertake the design, development, manufacturing, supply and lifecycle support of a new-generation helicopter engine in the 3,500–4,000 shp power category. Named “Aravalli,” the engine has been selected to power HAL’s upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).

The agreement was signed by Ajay Kumar Shrivastava, Director of Engineering, Research & Development at HAL, and Olivier Savin, Director of SAFHAL Helicopter Engines and Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Safran Helicopter Engines. HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K and Safran Helicopter Engines CEO Cedric Goubet attended the signing ceremony.

The Aravalli engine is named after the Aravalli mountain range, one of the world's oldest mountain systems. The programme is seen as an important step towards strengthening India's capabilities in advanced aerospace propulsion and reducing dependence on overseas technology for critical helicopter engines.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravi K said the agreement represents a major move towards greater self-reliance in aero-engine technology. He noted that the programme will establish a strong foundation for powering India's next-generation helicopter platforms while supporting the requirements of both the IMRH and DBMRH.

Cedric Goubet said the project marks a new chapter in the long-standing HAL-Safran relationship. According to him, the programme will combine the expertise of Indian and French engineering teams to develop an advanced propulsion system for future Indian rotorcraft. Safran also noted that this is the first time its helicopter engine division has undertaken co-development of an engine in this particular power class.

SAFHAL will bring together the complementary capabilities of HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines to develop an engine focused on high performance, reliability, maintainability and operational efficiency. The programme will cover advanced design, modern manufacturing techniques, extensive testing and long-term product support in accordance with international aerospace standards.

Although the initial focus is on military helicopters, the Aravalli engine could eventually have applications in the civilian sector. Possible uses include offshore transportation, utility missions and VVIP transport. The programme is also expected to help expand India's indigenous maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) ecosystem.

The new engine builds on the decades-long partnership between HAL and Safran. Their cooperation began with Artouste engines used in Cheetah and Chetak helicopters and later expanded to the Shakti engine family, which powers the Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Combat Helicopter and Light Utility Helicopter. With the Aravalli programme, the partnership is moving into a new phase focused on the joint design and development of a high-power turboshaft engine tailored for medium-lift rotorcraft. The project is expected to strengthen India's aerospace manufacturing base and could eventually open opportunities for the engine in international markets as well.
