US Vice President JD Vance announced that he will accompany his wife, Usha Vance, on her trip to Greenland this Friday, emphasizing in an online video that global security is at stake. “We’re going to check on the situation there,” Vance said in a video shared on Tuesday. Speaking on behalf of President Trump, he stated that the administration aims to strengthen security in Greenland, believing it is crucial for global protection.

Previously, US President Donald Trump sparked controversy in Europe by suggesting that the US should have some form of control over Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory rich in minerals. As a key maritime gateway to the Arctic and North Atlantic, Greenland holds strategic significance, especially as China and Russia seek access to its waterways and resources.

According to Usha Vance’s office, she will depart for Greenland on Thursday and return on Saturday. Initially, she and one of their children planned to explore historic sites and Greenlandic culture, but the trip’s focus shifted to national security following her husband's involvement. Vance joked that he didn’t want his wife to have all the fun and revealed plans to visit a Space Force outpost on Greenland’s northwest coast. He also warned that Greenland, along with the US and Canada, has faced threats from other nations and criticized leaders in Denmark and North America for neglecting the island’s importance.

During his first term, Trump proposed purchasing Greenland, though Denmark, a NATO ally, firmly rejected the idea, as did the people of Greenland. Usha Vance and a US delegation are scheduled to attend Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race, featuring 37 mushers and 444 dogs. Trump’s return to the White House has reignited discussions on territorial expansion. His administration has reportedly explored adding Canada as the 51st US state, reclaiming control of the Panama Canal, and even turning the war-torn Gaza Strip into a luxury outpost under American interests.
