A Russian drone attack hit an apartment building in Pavlohrad, southeastern Ukraine, on Friday, killing three people, including a child and a 76-year-old woman, and injuring 10 others, according to officials. This strike came just a day after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his deadly missile and drone attack on Kyiv, as Washington attempts to end the ongoing war.

Russian forces launched 103 Shahed and decoy drones overnight, targeting five Ukrainian regions. While no casualties were reported in the northeastern Sumy and Kharkiv regions, civilian infrastructure was damaged. The previous day's hours-long assault on Kyiv resulted in at least 12 deaths and 87 injuries, marking the deadliest attack on the Ukrainian capital since July.

In response, Trump expressed frustration with Putin’s actions, stating on Truth Social, “I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!” Trump’s efforts to broker a peace agreement have not yielded progress, and senior U.S. officials have warned that the administration may soon abandon efforts to halt the war if both sides do not negotiate.

Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, was set to meet Putin in Moscow on Friday for their second meeting this month and fourth since February. Both Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy were expected to attend the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican on Saturday, though it was unclear if they would meet separately. Meanwhile, Russia used the attack on Kyiv as a cover to launch nearly 150 assaults on Ukrainian positions along the 1,000-kilometer front line. Zelenskyy stated that while Ukraine’s forces were focused on defending against missiles and drones, Russia intensified its ground attacks.

Western European leaders have criticized Putin for stalling negotiations and attempting to seize more Ukrainian land, taking advantage of the military momentum. Trump accused Zelenskyy of prolonging the conflict by refusing to surrender Crimea, which Russia annexed illegally in 2014. Zelenskyy has repeatedly stated that recognizing Russian control over the peninsula is a red line. Zelenskyy also revealed that Ukraine had agreed to a U.S. ceasefire proposal 44 days ago, but Russian attacks, including a deadly strike on Sumy that killed over 30 civilians, continued. Recent Russian assaults have also targeted Odesa with drones and Zaporizhzhia with glide bombs.
