UK Village on Edge After Terror Alert Near RAF Fairford

A quiet village in Gloucestershire has been placed under heightened security after five men were arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. The incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, September 27, after police received a report about three suspicious vehicles that were believed to be travelling towards the military air base. Armed officers were sent to the area and five men were arrested in nearby Whelford. They were initially detained over suspected offences under the Explosives Act before being arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under the Terrorism Act.

The arrests triggered a large security operation around the vehicles. A 400-metre cordon was established and specialist Army personnel were brought in to examine the vehicles. As a precaution, around 85 households in Whelford were evacuated while officers and bomb disposal specialists assessed the situation. A nearby leisure centre was made available for residents who needed somewhere to stay during the operation.

Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation, with Gloucestershire Police and specialist teams supporting the operation.
