Saturday night was expected to be a significant occasion, marking Donald Trump’s return to the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner after nearly a decade. Trump later said he had been preparing to deliver especially sharp remarks aimed at the media, making the event highly anticipated in political and journalistic circles. The evening took a dramatic and violent turn when gunfire erupted inside the venue.

Secret Service agents immediately moved the president, the first lady, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials to safety. According to authorities, the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, had arrived at the Washington Hilton armed with two handguns and a shotgun. Investigators revealed that he had carefully planned the attack in advance.

Roughly ten minutes before opening fire, Allen reportedly sent a manifesto to his family, outlining his intended targets. Reports indicate that the list included high-ranking members of the Trump administration, arranged from top officials downward. Notably, Kash Patel was excluded from the list, though no clear explanation for this omission has been provided.

In the manifesto, Allen also attempted to justify his actions, expressing extreme views and grievances. He described his reasoning and even detailed his choice of ammunition, stating that he selected it in an effort to reduce unintended casualties, though he acknowledged he would proceed regardless if necessary.

Law enforcement officials said Allen forced his way through a security checkpoint and exchanged gunfire with authorities inside the hotel before being apprehended. Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, confirmed that he faces federal firearm and assault charges, with additional charges still under consideration as the investigation continues.
